Water-Wise Landscape Seminar: How to Build a Rain Garden

April 5, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A rain garden is a landscaped area designed to capture rain water and reduce polluted run-off by using natural infiltration processes that protect the local ecology.  When it rains, precipitation can pick up air born emissions, pesticides, fertilizers, pet waste, and other pollutants, which end up harming local bodies of water. Rain gardens help prevent this pollution from reaching creeks, rivers, and oceans by temporarily storing run-off and allowing the water to infiltrate into the ground.

Learn how to put the rainwater run-off from your landscape to good use and prevent pollutants from reaching the public water supply! Rain garden expert and landscaping extraordinaire, David Bailey and his team from Urban Oasis Landscape Design, will lead this three-hour, part-classroom, part-interactive seminar covering everything you need to know to install a rain garden in your yard. The goal of this seminar is for attendees of any gardening level, novice to expert, to walk away with the knowledge and experience needed to construct their very own rain garden at home.

During the classroom portion of this seminar, David will introduce the fundamentals of rain garden design, including: why rain gardens are important, construction tips, how to select a site and deal with pre-existing irrigation, the best plants for a rain garden, retro-fitting an existing yard, and common challenges. During the interactive portion, attendees will join David and his team, as we explore real life landscapes for ideal rain garden locations around the CRC neighborhood.  Then, we’ll finish the evening splitting into small groups to facilitate more intimate conversations with the pros.  Bring questions, get answers!

*This seminar is a part of the City of Boulder’s Rain Garden Program that is intended to help citizens get involved with flood mitigation and resiliency on a local, small-scale level. Any City of Boulder resident that attends this seminar will be eligible to receive a FREE Rain Garden In A Box. To get more details on the Rain Garden Program and to claim your free garden, attend this seminar on April 5th, 2017.
