Watt’z Up Wednesday: Energy Meter Exploration

Want to combine STEM learning with real-world impact? Energy Meter Exploration lets students track electricity use in the classroom, blending math, science, and conservation in a hands-on, interactive activity.

What is Energy Meter Exploration?

Energy meters are tools that measure how much electricity a device uses. By using these meters, students can visualize energy consumption, learn to analyze data, and brainstorm ways to reduce waste. This activity not only teaches valuable STEM concepts but also empowers students to make informed energy-saving decisions.

How to Conduct Energy Meter Exploration

Introduce and Research Energy Meter Exploration

Start with a lesson about how energy meters work and their role in conservation. Encourage students to research the following:

    • Kill A Watt Energy Meter: A portable, affordable device for measuring real-time energy use ($20–$30).
    • Smart Plugs with Energy Monitoring: Smart plugs that track energy use through apps ($15–$25).
    • Free Alternatives: Check local libraries or utility companies for loaner meters.
    • DIY Energy Monitor: For STEM enthusiasts, kits to build a monitor cost around $10–$15.

Choose Devices to Monitor

Select a few classroom devices, such as a projector, computer, or fan. Ask students to predict which devices will use the most electricity.

Record the Data

Over a week, use the energy meters to track how much electricity each device consumes. Have students record their findings in tables or charts to visualize the data.

Analyze and Act

Compare energy use between devices and brainstorm ways to reduce consumption. Discuss actions like turning off devices when not in use, using power strips, or choosing energy-efficient alternatives.

Extend the Lesson

Expand to Home Use

Encourage students to borrow an energy meter and track electricity use at home. They can share their findings with classmates.

Explore Renewable Energy

Discuss renewable energy sources and how they compare to traditional electricity generation in terms of sustainability.

Did You Know?

💡 Devices like projectors and space heaters are often the biggest classroom energy users. By monitoring and managing their use, classrooms can significantly cut energy waste!
