Watt’z Up Wednesday: Conduct a “Vampire Power” Hunt

Turn Your Students into Energy Detectives!

Looking for a hands-on STEM activity that raises awareness about energy conservation? A “Vampire Power” Hunt lets students explore how devices draw electricity even when turned off. This activity is an interactive way to teach energy concepts and empower students to take action both in school and at home.

What is “Vampire Power”?

Before diving into the activity, explain the concept of “vampire power.” Many devices, like phone chargers, printers, and monitors, consume electricity even when not in active use. These “energy vampires” can waste up to 10% of a home’s energy annually, costing families an average of $100 a year. Check out this awesome video from Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s YouTube channel.

How to Conduct a “Vampire Power” Hunt

  1. Explain the Concept: Begin with a short lesson about vampire power. Discuss how devices in standby mode can draw energy and share real-world examples like gaming consoles, idle TVs, and plugged-in appliances.
  2. Detect Energy Vampires: Send students on a hunt around the classroom or school to find devices that might be consuming vampire power. Encourage them to look for:
    • Plugged-in but unused chargers
    • Computers or monitors in sleep mode
    • Appliances like printers or coffee makers left in standby mode
  3. Measure Energy Use (optional): If you have an energy meter available, let students measure the energy being drawn by these devices. Seeing the numbers in real time makes the lesson more impactful.
  4. Discuss Solutions: Wrap up the activity with a brainstorming session. Discuss simple ways to reduce vampire power, such as:
    • Unplugging devices when not in use
    • Using smart power strips
    • Turning devices off at the power source

Extend the Lesson

  1. Share What You Learned
Have students create mini-presentations or posters explaining vampire power and their findings. They can present to classmates, teachers, or even their families to spread awareness.
  2. Take It Home
Encourage students to conduct a vampire power hunt at home, tracking how many devices they find and the actions they take to reduce energy waste.

Did You Know?

💡 “Vampire power” can account for up to 10% of a household’s energy use. By simply unplugging unused devices, families can save around $100 annually. Small changes truly make a big difference!
