BOULDER – 11/11/16 – Born out of the energy crisis of the 1970s, the Center for ReSource Conservation is hosting its 40th Anniversary celebration at a special event on Wednesday, November 16 at eTown Hall.

The celebration, called Heroes & Hope, will highlight how the environmental movement has changed through the years, what’s working, and the road ahead.

From humble beginnings, the Boulder-based nonprofit has since grown into a leading social enterprise – helping more than 350,000 families conserve — with major programs in water, energy, and waste.

“We’re the boots on the ground,” said Neal Lurie, the nonprofit’s president. “After 40 years of implementing sustainability programs, we’re determined to make conservation so easy that people don’t even realize they’re doing it. That’s because our programs are designed to be economically smart, not just environmentally savvy.”

It appears to be working. Last year was a record year for the Center for ReSource Conservation — it’s program saved 160 million gallons of water, helped 16,000 students lower their schools’ energy usage by up 15%, and diverted nearly 4 million pounds of building materials from landfills. And they report that this year’s impact is ahead of last year’s record pace.

Heroes & Hope celebrates 40 years of environmental progress and brings together sustainability pioneers and community leaders from across the region. The event will also honor several “Conservation Superheroes” who are quietly making a difference.

“As the environmental movement has changed, so have we,” added Lurie. “As more people move to Colorado and resources get strained, we’re expanding our programs to support low-income families and others in need. As we help them conserve natural resources like water and energy, it’s not just good for the planet – it’s good for their pocketbook too.”
