Getting the right sprinkler heads and nozzles in the right spots can make your system more efficient. In this guide, Resource Central’s Slow the Flow sprinkler evaluation experts break down spray heads — what they are, how they work, and how to get the most out of them.
What Are Spray Heads?
Spray heads, also known as pop-ups, work well in small spaces like front yards or narrow areas between the sidewalk and street. The heads themselves don’t move, but they can use two types of nozzles:
- Spray nozzles: spray water in a fan shape and water quickly (typically between 1.0–1.5 inches per hour)
- Rotary nozzles: spin as they spray water slowly (typically between 0.25-0.5 inches per hour)
Because spray nozzles water so fast, it’s a good idea to use a cycle and soak schedule to prevent water from running off.
Some spray heads can also come with useful features:
- Pressure regulation: keeps water pressure from getting too high, and helps prevent misting and premature wear and tear.
- Check valves: stop water from leaking out after the system turns off.
Nozzle Features – Made Easy
Radius = how far the water sprays.
- Most nozzles can be adjusted a little (about 2 feet.)
- The color of the nozzle usually tells you how far it sprays.
- Aim for head-to-head coverage: water from one head should reach the next head over.
Arc = the shape or angle of the spray.
- Some nozzles have fixed angles like 90°, 180°, or 360° — good for square or rectangular areas.
- Others are adjustable — great for oddly shaped spaces.
- If the nozzle has a ridged collar, you can probably adjust the angle.
- Some nozzles spray in a rectangular pattern (meaning a long distance one way and a short distance the other way) which is perfect for narrow areas.
Special Nozzles
- U-Series: spray both near and far — useful for slopes or hard-to-water spots.
- HE VAN: make bigger water drops that don’t blow away easily — great for slopes or windy areas.
