Watt’z Up Wednesday: Create an Energy-Saving Team

In this week’s Watt’z Up Wednesday, empowering students to be energy heroes by creating an energy-saving team! Try forming a classroom “Energy-Saving Team” to teach students about energy conservation, environmental responsibility, and teamwork. Not only will students learn the impact of their actions, but they’ll also take on leadership roles that empower them to make a difference.

Step-by-Step Classroom Activity: Creating an Energy-Saving Team

Introduce Energy Conservation: Start with a brief overview of why conserving energy is essential. This real-world introduction helps students understand the topic’s relevance to their lives.

Assign Team Roles: Divide students into roles like “Light Monitor,” “Electronics Monitor,” and “Temperature Controller.” Each role has specific tasks that relate to monitoring and managing energy use in the classroom, ensuring students are actively engaged.

Daily Energy Checks: Throughout the day, have each team member monitor their assigned area. Encourage students to turn off lights when not in use, check that devices are unplugged or off, and keep track of classroom temperature settings.

Reflect on Impact: At the end of the week, review the team’s efforts as a class. Discuss what they achieved, and share how their actions made a tangible impact on energy usage. Use this time to calculate estimated savings or benefits based on their conservation efforts.

STEM Learning and Environmental Impact

Through this activity, students gain a hands-on understanding of energy conservation, monitoring, and teamwork—valuable STEM skills that foster real-world impact. Teachers can further extend the lesson by discussing how small actions accumulate over time, leading to measurable environmental benefits.
