Watt’z Up Wednesday: Natural Daylight

Did you know that something as simple as rearranging your classroom can help save energy? By making better use of natural daylight, you can reduce the need for artificial lighting while creating a brighter, more inviting learning space. This small change can have a big impact on energy conservation while also enhancing student focus and well-being.

What is Natural Daylight Optimization?

Natural daylight optimization is the practice of arranging classroom spaces to take full advantage of available daylight. Studies show that maximizing natural light can improve student concentration, mood, and even test scores—all while cutting down on energy costs.

How to Conduct a Natural Daylight Optimization Activity

Assess Your Classroom

Observe how daylight moves through the room at different times of the day. Identify areas with the most natural light and consider how you can best utilize these spaces.

Rearrange Seating

Position desks near windows to maximize natural lighting and reduce reliance on artificial lights. Consider how glare or shadows may affect learning and adjust accordingly.

Establish a “Lights-Off” Zone

Create a classroom rule that when natural light is sufficient, artificial lights stay off. Assign a rotating “Light Leader” to monitor when lights should be turned on or off.

Reflect and Adjust

Have students discuss how the change impacts their learning environment. Do they feel more alert? Does the classroom feel different? Encourage them to think about how these small shifts contribute to energy savings.

Track Energy Savings

Keep a tally of how many hours per week the classroom operates without artificial lights and estimate the potential energy savings.

Explore the Science of Light

Incorporate a lesson on how sunlight affects human health, circadian rhythms, and productivity.
