Watt’z Up Wednesday: No Power Hour

How often do we stop to think about how much we rely on electricity in our daily routines? A “No Power Hour” is a simple yet impactful activity that helps students recognize their dependency on energy while encouraging creative problem-solving. This exercise ties directly into real-world energy conservation efforts and builds awareness of sustainable practices.

What is a “No Power Hour”?

A “No Power Hour” challenges students to spend an hour without electricity. By turning off lights, projectors, and other electronics, students experience firsthand how much energy is used in their daily activities. This exercise not only highlights energy dependence but also inspires new ways to conserve.

Set the Stage

Announce the challenge to your class and explain the rules: for one hour, no electricity will be used. This includes turning off lights, projectors, and electronics.

Plan Activities

Choose lessons or activities that don’t rely on technology. Examples include:

    • Reading or storytelling
    • Creative writing or drawing
    • Hands-on STEM projects that don’t require power

Observe the Impact

During the hour, ask students to reflect on how the classroom feels and functions without electricity. Are there ways to adapt or improve?

Reflect Together

After the hour, hold a class discussion. What was easy? What was challenging? Brainstorm ways to use less energy during a typical day, such as maximizing natural light or unplugging unused devices.

Extend the Lesson

Energy-Free Challenges at Home

Encourage students to try a “No Power Hour” with their families and share their experiences in class.

Calculate Energy Savings

Research how much electricity the class saved during the hour and discuss the potential long-term impact of similar actions.
