Low-Water Gardening Made Easy
The Garden In A Box program makes it easy to transform your yard into a beautiful, drought-tolerant oasis helping you to use less water on your landscaping year after year. Each spring and summer, we offer a selection of professionally designed, low-water garden kits tailor-made for Colorado yards. These do-it-yourself kits include quart-sized perennial plants, plant-by-number maps, seasonal maintenance suggestions, and watering schedule recommendations. Ditch thirsty turf grass and plant a new perspective with Garden In A Box!
How it Works
The Garden In A Box program offers two times to purchase gardens during the gardening season:
-
- Pre-order in March for pickup and planting in May and June.
- Pre-order in June for pickup and planting in August and September.
- Join the Interest List for all 2025 Garden season news and updates.
- Measure your space and determine the sun exposure.
- When available, pre-order your Garden In A Box online here.
- Remove lawn, if needed.
Our kits are designed to replace sections of non-functional lawns for the most water-saving impact. - Pick up your Garden In A Box order.
- Plant and mulch your new Garden In A Box.
- After the first year, dial back the water and begin saving.
55% of residential water use on the Front Range is used outdoors, mostly on lawns!
As a small nonprofit, we rely on volunteer support to help distribute these Garden In A Box kits to thousands of customers across the Front Range each year. Volunteering at garden pickup events is a fun way to support low-water landscaping in your community and meet others who share your love for gardening. We need volunteers during May, June, August, and September.

“This is a wonderful program and I am incredibly grateful to have access to it. I tell everyone about it and hope to encourage others to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to help pollinators, save water and become more aware of our impact on this planet and how we can make it better. Thank you!”

“I bought five kits and love all of them, as well as the amazingly done garden guides, which are so helpful for beginners like myself. We are restoring a very neglected lawn (and reducing it), and I’m so thrilled to have replaced 500+ square feet with mostly natives that are also piquing my neighbors’ interest. Thank you for all you do, and to the volunteers who ran the pickup, as it was so efficient and lovely. This is an amazing program and I’m grateful to have been able to take part in it!”
