When it comes to energy conservation and sustainability, Rock Canyon’s Eco Club is ahead of the game! Their recent participation in the Renew Our Schools competition showcases how a single team’s efforts can create change throughout a school community.
On October 30, 24 Eco Club members embarked on a unique learning adventure. They took a guided tour of their school’s roof to see the solar panels in action. The experience gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the production of renewable energy, and the critical role it plays in reducing carbon footprints.
Energy Education in Action
An expert from E Light Electric, the company responsible for maintaining the school’s solar panels, led the tour. Over the course of an hour, the students explored the technology behind solar energy. They learned how sunlight transforms into usable electricity and what factors can cause disruptions in the system.
The solar panel tour was just one of many activities the Eco Club organized as part of their Renew Our Schools journey. They created posters with energy-saving tips, and encouraged teachers to turn off lights when not in use. The club took a proactive approach to conservation.
Club sponsor Jenny Wills explained how their strategies evolve each year:
“We’ve looked at everything from HVAC systems to the building’s boiler, but this is the first time we’ve done something like a solar panel tour,” Wills said in a recent interview. “It’s all about finding new ways to engage students while highlighting the energy-saving tools already in place.”
The competition isn’t just about winning—it’s about fostering awareness and empowering students to take action.
Inspiring a Culture of Sustainability
The Eco Club’s efforts serve as a typical example of Renew Our Schools participation. The goal is to engage students in hands-on energy education, encourage collaboration, and drive lasting change.
Through their activities, the Eco Club has not only reduced energy usage but also inspired a school-wide conversation about sustainability.

Rock Canyon Eco Club’s success reminds us of what’s possible when students and teachers work together toward a shared goal. By participating in Renew Our Schools, Rock Canyon proved energy conservation isn’t just a pie in the sky idea. It’s something every school can embrace.
