Is the Do-It-Yourself Lawn Replacement Option Right for You?

If you are exploring Lawn Replacement and find yourself most excited about the idea of complimentary Garden In A Box kits, the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) option may be worth a closer look.

With DIY, you take the lead on removing your lawn instead of using removal services. In exchange, you can receive up to four Garden In A Box kits through your participating water provider. Each kit covers about 100 square feet, meaning participants removing 400 square feet or more may qualify for four kits. That is roughly a $750 value in professionally designed plants suited for Colorado’s semi-arid climate.

For many homeowners, that trade-off feels empowering and practical.

2026 DIY Applications open on March 9!

What to Expect from the Process

The DIY option offers flexibility, but it does require some upfront planning and follow-through. As part of your application, you will be asked to provide a few key details to help us review and approve your project, including:

  • The square footage of the lawn you plan to remove
  • Your preferred garden type based on sun exposure
  • A photo of your water bill
  • Photos of your current lawn area

Having this information ready before you apply can help make the process smoother and faster.

If approved, you will receive the green light to begin removal and choose a garden pickup date that fits your schedule. Spring garden pickups begin in May, and late summer pickups begin in August.

Before picking up your plants, at least 75% of your approved lawn area must be removed. You will submit progress photos for verification. Once confirmed, you will be cleared to collect your kits at your selected event. This final step helps ensure your project is on track and sets you up for a successful, waterwise garden.

Choosing Your Removal Method

There is no single required way to remove turf. You can choose the method that best fits your schedule, comfort level, and project type. Some participants rent a sod cutter for quicker results, while others prefer slower, lower-impact methods like solarizing or sheet mulching.

If you plan to dig or use machinery, Colorado law requires submitting an 811 ticket before starting to locate underground utilities. If you live in a homeowners association (HOA), you are responsible for securing any necessary approvals before moving forward.

Who Is DIY Best For?

DIY tends to be a great fit for homeowners who:

  • Want to receive complimentary Garden In A Box kits
  • Have a tighter budget
  • Prefer managing their own timeline
  • Feel comfortable coordinating a landscape project
  • Enjoy actively shaping their yard’s transformation

While the DIY option does take organization and effort, it does not require a specific removal method or pace. Many participants tailor the project to fit their abilities and schedule.

At its core, DIY is about turning thirsty turf into a resilient, waterwise landscape that supports long-term water savings. If you are motivated by flexibility and the opportunity to replant your space with thoughtfully designed gardens, this option could be the right fit for you.
