Celebrating National Mural Day: Public Art Meets Conservation at Resource Central

Did you know that the last Saturday in June each year marks National Mural Day? This is a great opportunity to celebrate the power of public art to inspire, educate, and bring people together. At Resource Central, our murals do all three!

If you’ve visited the Materials Reuse facility, you’ve likely noticed at least one of the two large murals on site. While the Materials Reuse facility is a vital local resource to shop for reclaimed building materials, donate usable items, or attend an event, it’s also an opportunity to feel connected with the community and embrace being part of the conservation mission that you help make possible every day. This Saturday, June 27, you’re invited to come view the murals (and possibilities of reuse!) with fresh eyes.

Art That Reflects Our Mission

One of the most recognizable features at the Materials Reuse facility is Repollinators, a colorful mural created in 2023 through a partnership between Resource Central, Street Wise Arts, and local artist David Ocelotl Garcia. The artwork features pollinators carrying reclaimed materials, celebrating the role reuse plays in supporting healthy ecosystems and keeping valuable materials out of the landfill. You can read more about the art piece here.

Visitors can also find a colorful graffiti-style mural by local artist Jennifer Vazquez along the southeast corner of our covered shopping area. Located near the processing area where incoming donations begin their journey toward a second life, the piece brings brightness and creativity to one of the hardest-working parts of the facility.

Inspired by Reuse?

One of the best parts of the Materials Reuse program is getting to see what you create once materials leave our yard! From DIY projects and home remodels to art projects and creative uses, this community is constantly finding creative ways to give materials a second life.

If Resource Central materials have inspired you to get creative or complete a project you’re proud of, whether big (like our murals!) or small, we’d love to see it. Send photos of your DIYs, home projects, and creative reuse ideas to marketing@resourcecentral.org or tag us on social media @ResourceCentral and help inspire fellow community members!
