With summer around the corner, it’s time to check some items off your spring yard work list!
To establish a healthy lawn from the get-go, follow these tips below:
Activate your sprinkler system
Aim to activate your system shortly after the last frost date of the season. For most areas along the Front Range, this is usually between May 11-20. Depending on the weather, your lawn likely only needs water one day per week in May. Need help finding a trustworthy landscaper to activate your system? Visit the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado website.
Sign up for a Slow the Flow sprinkler evaluation
We partner with over 40 water providers along the Colorado Front Range to provide FREE sprinkler evaluations for homeowners. Appointments start in June!
Prep your mower
-
- Sharpen your mower blades so that you can get a clean, even cut on your grass. Dull blades can make your lawn susceptible to pests and diseases.
- Clean your mower deck. The underside of your mower can clog up with debris, which can lead to rusting and other issues.
- If needed, change your oil and clean or replace you air filter.

Aerate your yard
Aeration, which involves poking hundreds of small holes into your soil, allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone of your grass. It reduces soil compaction and thatch. Find lawn aeration tips and recommendations from Colorado State University Extension.
