Watt’z Up Wednesday: Power Strip Patrol

Easy Energy Savings!

A “Power Strip Patrol” is an easy classroom habit that saves energy daily. This activity helps students understand how managing electricity with power strips can reduce waste, protect devices, and promote sustainability.

What is a “Power Strip Patrol”?

Power strips are more than convenient—they’re a powerful tool for energy conservation. By plugging multiple devices into a single power strip, you can easily cut off electricity to all connected devices when they’re not in use. This not only saves energy but also extends the life of your classroom electronics by protecting them from electrical surges.

How to Conduct a “Power Strip Patrol”

  1. Explain Why This Matters
Teach students how power strips work and why they’re effective. Highlight that turning one off can cut electricity to multiple devices, preventing energy waste from devices in standby mode.
  2. Set Up Power Stations
Identify areas in your classroom where electronics like computers, projectors, or chargers are regularly used. Plug these devices into power strips to make managing their power use more efficient.
  3. Assign a “Power Captain”
Rotate responsibility among students to ensure the power strip is switched off at the end of each day. This role encourages leadership and accountability while reinforcing good energy habits.
  4. Reflect on Energy Savings
Discuss how turning off devices daily can save significant energy over time. Encourage students to think about how they could implement similar practices at home.

Extend the Lesson

  1. Compare Energy Use
Use an energy meter (if available) to show students how much power is saved when devices are completely turned off using a power strip.
  2. Make it a Challenge
Track how many days the class successfully powers down at the end of the day. Celebrate milestones to keep the habit engaging and fun.

Did You Know?

💡 Power strips not only save energy but also protect devices from electrical surges. Using them smartly reduces wear and tear on classroom technology, saving money in the long run!
